The Science
Cannabinoids Demystified
As farmers and producers, we are fascinated about the science and health benefits of the family of cannabis plants. We have dedicated ourselves to learning more everyday, however, you don’t have to get into the weeds with us to reap the benefits. Here are some basics:
What’s the Difference between CBD and THC?
CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) are two of the most prominent cannabinoids (chemical compounds) found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. There are different varieties of this amazing plant, however; the marijuana cannabis variety has a higher concentration of THC, while hemp plant has a higher concentration of CBD. All cannabinoids are somewhat similar, but differ in their chemical arrangement and affects on the body. THC is the psychoactive cannabinoid of the family, while CBD, CBG and CBN are all considered non-psychoactive, meaning that you do not get the high that we associate with THC and marijuana. Although CBD legally may have trace amounts of THC up to 0.3%, it is not enough to result in a psychoactive response. CBD is known to have many of the promising health benefits, minus the psychoactive side effects.
-
CBD is the most researched natural compound found in cannabis. First isolated in the 1930s, it didn’t come into favor until the 1970s when used as an anti-convulsant. Since then, it’s been shown to have many therapeutic benefits, including anti-anxiety, pain-relieving, anti-nausea, and sedative properties.
-
CBN is another variety of naturally-occuring cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant, that has shown to produce some different effects on the body. It’s been shown to be most effective in aiding sleep, stimulating appetite, and treating pain.
-
Similar to CBD and CBN, CBG is another cannabinoid with zero psychoactive properties, but a range of beneficial effects. It’s been shown to act as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic agent.
